About Hammertoes
Hammertoes are caused when the middle joint becomes trapped in an upward position, generating an odd bend, and the toe resembles a hammer. This abnormality can result in pain and difficulties walking, as well as the formation of a corn or callus on top of the joint. Hammertoes are characterized by a hard joint, pain at the top of the bent toe, and swelling. Although you may not notice any changes in the early stages of growth, this deformity will progress with time, causing not only discomfort but also additional complications.
Hammertoes: What causes them?
Wearing narrow high heels or tight-fitting shoes, genetic foot type, trauma or injury, or an imbalance of toe muscles or toe length can all play a role in the formation of hammertoes. In the early stages of this deformity, you may suffer mild pain, limited flexibility, redness, or corns and calluses.
Hammertoes: What are my treatment options?
The most significant factor in avoiding hammertoes is wearing the proper footwear. Your shoes should have enough space in the toe box and a firm orthotic insert. You are allowing your toes to naturally align themselves in this manner. If you are feeling pain, it is also recommended that you take NSAIDs and utilize crest pads. For more serious cases, we do offer surgical options from bone fusions, which includes partial removal of the bone, and for worst case scenarios, amputation of the toe. Which procedure we decide is the best option will depend on various circumstances.
Hammertoes: When should I seek treatment?
As the condition worsens, the hammertoe can become stiff, resulting in a reduced range of motion or the toe becoming irreversibly deformed. When you notice signs such as swelling, open sores, or being unable to straighten your toe, you should consult a doctor
